Wise Old Woman Seminar

Wise Old Woman Seminar

Seminar Invitation

"But God himself cannot flourish if a man's soul is starved. The feminine psyche responds to this hunger, for it is the function of Eros to unite what Logos has sundered."
C.G. Jung, 1970

Searching for individuals to explore the wise old woman spirit, a missing but vital part of our psyche that is critically needed in the world today. Why? Because, as an aspect of the feminine divine, this wisdom spirit requires the engagement of us humans in order to save humankind from self-extinction.

Thus, the creation of an experiential seminar to explore the Wise Old Woman (WOW) spirit together! This announcement invites anyone who is curious, open, humble and willing to engage with this old/new archetype of the feminine. Note that the feminine resides in men, as well, and is of greatest significance to them.

This seminar emerged from a study in which I explore Jung's and von Franz's work on the archetype of the Wise Old Man and carry it forward to where we need it most: to the Wise Old Woman spirit. We have not been able to hold our own against the destructive impulse that is part of our very selves - indeed, that is a part of the godhead as well.

The story begins 7,000 BCE, during the time of the goddess-centered culture of Old Europe, an advanced civilization that lived in peace and unity for over 4,000 prehistoric years. However, the 5,000 years that followed have witnessed the emergence of a masculine god-image that has become increasingly one-sided and distorted, even violent in its extremeness.

Although Jung and von Franz suggested that the feminine wisdom figure is, more or less, a correlate of the Wise Old Man archetype, it is clear that the hundreds-of-years-old emphasis on the masculine isn't working by itself. Of course, the image of a masculine deity is not to be exiled, any more than the consciousness we have gained, but a rebalancing is clearly needed.

Moreover, Jung observed that the complexio oppositorum - the combination of opposites contained in the god-image - is missing in our consciousness. A compelling need for a compensating imago of the divine feminine has been constellated.

The Wise Old Woman spirit is divine, but she is not a goddess, nor is she worshipped. Jung described how the wisdom figure is born out of each individual psyche as a psychological and individual reality.

Through the human imagination and dreams, the Wise Old Woman spirit offers a kind of collaboration and partnership involving a very real intimacy and immediacy. As such, the Wise Old Woman spirit echoes the ancient message from the collective unconscious of which Jung and von Franz wrote: "Protect me and I will protect you" and "Help me and I will help thee."

The Wise Old Woman spirit invites our collaboration with her as she holds that wisdom, and offers it personally to each of us. Further research into Jung's feminine principle uncovered qualities that were unique and different from the archetype of the Wise Old Man. Thus, the Wise Old Woman spirit came into a life of her own.

Appearing often in today's dreams and other messages from unconscious, it is as if she were reaching out. A partnership with the Wise Old Woman spirit is a partnership with the wisdom of the ages.

There are neither requirements for academic or professional achievement, nor focus on theory or opinion. It is not a group for therapy, but a place for learning about and exploring the archetype of the Wise Old Woman. Our meetings will be held in nature in a beautiful sunroom that meets under the trees.

Each WOW seminar will occur once a month and meet on Saturdays or other agreed upon weekday, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Each seminar will have a particular focus on the WOW spirit and partnership with her. Members will participate through readings, shaping clay, viewing slides, guided imagery, and reflections, comments and questions.

I welcome your calls and will be glad to tell you more about this extraordinary and pioneering seminar! 925 932-2090
